Home & Kitchen - New and Existing Trends

Home and kitchen trends are constantly evolving, but for 2021 we are seeing a shift in design philosophy. The modern standard of open concept design, although excellent for entertaining, has presented some challenges as of recent due to the massive shift to working from home. Since the state of our world has been altered by the pandemic, more and more people are working from home and are finding that the open layout concept is not working under this new paradigm. Quiet office space in the home is at a premium, and is especially complicated by the fact that many families also have young children at home. We are seeing more homeowners looking to achieve a bit more separation within their home layout to provide the needed privacy during the work day. However, this doesn't mean that the open concept has to be totally abandoned, nor is adding walls the only way to achieve separation.

There are opportunities to create separation within any open concept layout by using reconfigurable means such as screens, sliding doors, or freestanding furniture. It's all about creating spaces within your home that provide some much needed privacy, increase productivity, but without compromising or abandoning the underlying open concept design.

Another design trend that we will continue to see more of in 2021 is an increased use of open shelving in kitchens. Open shelves present the opportunity to create a "curated look" with homeowners carefully integrating decorative ceramics, clay/terracotta pieces, woven baskets, and artwork. The combination of decorative pieces and open shelving adds personality to the kitchen space without compromising functionality. People no longer want to hide beautiful pieces behind closed doors, and open shelving provides the canvas to showcase style and personalize the space. The kitchen is arguably one of the most used places in the home and is often the heart of entertaining and family gatherings. Make it special and show off those pieces!

Whether you're thinking about adding some private space and separation to your place, or looking to update and personalize your kitchen, always remember that your home should be an extension of your personality. It is a place where you live, work, entertain, and gather. Make it unique and be true to your style so that you can truly love the space that you create. Happy decorating!
